This assignment requires your group to examine how a real organization plans and manages its logistics activities. You must connect logistics concepts with operational evidence and evaluate how logistics functions contribute to competitive advantage.

Assignment Scenario

Your group has been appointed as a junior logistics consulting team. Select one organization operating in Malaysia and analyse its logistics activities. Based on your findings, propose practical improvements and appraise how its logistics functions support or could strengthen its competitive advantage.

You may use a large company, SME, retailer, manufacturer, courier company, e-commerce platform, food company, logistics service provider or other organization with sufficient publicly available information.

Part A Company and Logistics Overview

Introduce the selected organization and explain the role of logistics in its operations. Include:

• Company background, main products or services, customers and market coverage.
• A simple supply chain or logistics flow from suppliers to the final customer.  The main logistics activities performed by the organization.

Part B Organization of Logistics Activities

Explain how the organization should coordinate its logistics activities to achieve efficient and effective logistics management. Your discussion must cover at least four of the following functions:

• Procurement and supplier management.
• Demand forecasting and order management.
• Inventory management.
• Warehousing and materials handling.
• Transportation and distribution.
• Customer service and reverse logistics.
• Logistics information systems and technology.

Identify at least two operational problems or risks. Recommend realistic actions to improve cost, time, quality, service, visibility or resource utilization.

Part C Logistics and Competitive Advantage

Appraise how the selected logistics functions contribute to competitive advantage. Your appraisal should:

• Explain the meaning of competitive advantage in the selected organization.
• Discuss how logistics supports cost leadership, differentiation, responsiveness, reliability, customer satisfaction or market reach.
• Use company evidence and logistics concepts to support the discussion.
• Identify limitations, trade-offs or weaknesses instead of describing only the positive aspects.
• Propose three prioritized recommendations and explain their expected impact.

Part D Conclusion

Summarise the main findings and state which logistics activity has the greatest influence on the organization’s competitive advantage. Justify your conclusion.
