BBA1124 Individual Assignment 1: Design-Thinking
Introduction
In this assignment, you will utilize the design-thinking methodology to conceptualize and develop a birthday gift for a close friend or relative. This assignment encourages you to apply creative problem-solving skills to design a personalized present that resonates with the recipient’s preferences and needs.
The Task
Initial: Choose a close friend or relative as the recipient of your gift.
Empathize: Deepen your understanding of the recipient’s preferences and daily challenges through a direct interview. Ask specific questions related to the domains found in the Value Proposition Canvas provided in Appendix 1.
Define: Use the Value Proposition Canvas to investigate the below.
- Friend/Relative Profile: Using the information gathered from your interview, fill in the customer profile detailing the recipient’s needs, wants and fears.
- Value Map: Develop your gift idea by detailing how the present can alleviate specific pains and enhance gains for your recipient, focusing on creating a thoughtful and personalized experience, benefits and features.
Ideate: Generate a range of gift ideas that are affordable and could effectively meet the identified needs and desires in the value map. These can include digital gifts like a curated Spotify playlist or simple, low-cost options. During this phase, provide a cost estimation for each proposed gift to ensure they remain economically feasible. Indicate “Cost = RM0” if there are no expenses associated with the gift.
Prototype: Create a basic prototype for the chosen idea, which could range from a visual representation, a descriptive plan, or a digital layout, depending on the nature of the gift.
Test: Present the chosen gift to your friend or relative and observe their reaction to it. Document their initial response, any feedback they provide, and their overall satisfaction with the gift. This direct engagement will offer valuable insights into how well the gift meets the criteria established in the Value Proposition Canvas and the effectiveness of your empathetic design approach. Adjust your prototype or concept based on this feedback to better tailor the gift to the recipient’s preferences and needs.
Assignment Format
Submit either a Word or PDF document. For your submission, please ensure to use Times New Roman, size 11 font, and set margins to 2.5 cm on all sides. Structure your content clearly using appropriate levels of headings and include page numbers on each page. A simple, professional title page is required.
