Subject Operational Amplifier Circuits (Electronics Lab)

Electronics Lab Assignment: 741 Op-Amp Inverting, Non-Inverting and Multistage Circuits

Programme Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering with Honours
Lab topic Operational amplifiers (741)
Deliverables Task 1 hand calculations and sketches; Task 2 simulation results

In this Malaysian engineering lab, students analyse three op-amp amplifiers driven by a 1 Vpk, 10 kHz signal from ±12 V supplies, first by calculation and then through circuit simulation, and present both in the results section.

Op-Amp Basics (Figure 1)

The brief shows the 8-pin layout of a typical op amp (offset null, inverting and non-inverting inputs, V−, V+, output, no connection) and its circuit symbol.

Circuits to Analyse

  1. Circuit 1 – Inverting amplifier (Figure 2): input resistor R1, 10 kΩ feedback resistor R2, oscilloscope on input and output.
  2. Circuit 2 – Non-inverting amplifier (Figure 3): signal on the non-inverting input with 10 kΩ gain-setting resistors.
  3. Circuit 3 – Multistage amplifier (Figure 4): cascaded 741 stages using resistors between 2 kΩ and 15 kΩ as drawn.

Tasks

  • Task 1 – Calculation: apply a related circuit theorem to calculate the output voltage, show the working in the results section, and sketch the input and output waveforms.
  • Task 2 – Simulation: simulate the circuits in suitable software and include the schematic, a screenshot of the output voltage measurement and the input/output waveforms.

Students usually get the single-stage gains right but slip on the multistage circuit, where each stage’s gain and sign must be carried through in order, and on the waveform sketches, where the inverting output should be 180° out of phase and clipped if it exceeds the ±12 V rails. Comparing your calculated and simulated values in one table strengthens the discussion. Our engineering homework helper and lab report review service can check your work.
