RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES LEVEL 3 2019
This is a practical application task that tests your ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the vocational subject. The work required from you is an important and compulsory component of your studies.
1. General information
- 1.1 Study the task carefully.
- 1.2 Note the mark and time allocations per sub-task and for the task as a whole.
- 1.3 Note the submission date(s).
- 1.4 Study the resources required carefully.
- 1.5 Use the assessment tool as guidance on how your work will be marked.
- 1.6 You are required to provide proof that you submitted work done by yourself.
2. Description of the task
In this task, you will prepare a cost-benefit analysis to demonstrate the potential of monetary savings and determine return on investment (in years) for a residential SWH installation. You must use your findings to proof that the installation of solar geysers is cost effective due to the fact that the future savings in electricity cost are more than the capital outlay for the installation of these geysers.
3. Instructions for the task
3.1 Sub-task 1:
Determine the current cost of electricity geyser for one year (Total: 15 marks; 40 minutes)
- Obtain an electricity bill from the local municipality or your households’ prepaid receipts. The bill will provide data on how much electricity is currently being used and also the cost per unit in kWh. Retrieve monthly consumption of electricity and cost per unit in kWh.
- Estimate the average percentage (%) consumption of the electric geyser of the total monthly electricity bill.
- Calculate the monthly amounts of kWh and cost for electricity used for an electric geyser. Show calculation steps.
- Calculate the annual amounts of kWh and cost for electricity used for an electric geyser. Show the calculation steps.
3.2 Sub-task 2:
Determine the initial costs of installation and maintenance of a solar water heater (Total: 7 marks; 15 minutes)
- Submit a quotation for a solar water heater of your choice from a specific solar water heater installation company. (Quotations are also available on the Internet.)
- Retrieve the following information from the quotation and write down the answers for:

3.3 Sub-task 3:
Determine incentives and rebates (Total: 8 marks; 15 minutes)
- Incentives, such as rebates and subsidies, are given out to those who choose to switch to solar. You must determine whether the customer will benefit from such incentives.
- You must then determine the initial cost by subtracting the above incentives (if any).
3.4 Sub-task 4:
Perform a cost-benefit analysis (Total: 15 marks; 40 minutes)
- Determine the difference between the initial costs of a solar water heater and an electric geyser of similar capacity.
- Determine the payback period for the capital cost of the solar water heating system if the tariff increases with 10% per annum. Use simple interest calculation.
- Redraw TABLE 1 and insert the data which will indicate a tariff increase of 10% per annum.
| Year | Cost per unit R/kWh | Usage per month in kWh | Usage per year in kWh | Cost per year in Rand | Savings in Rand |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | |||||
| Year 2 | |||||
| Year 3 | |||||
| Year 4 | |||||
| Year 5 |
3.5 Sub-task 5:
Conclusion (Total: 5 marks;)
- Motivate why it is beneficial to use a solar water heater instead of an electric geyser.
4. Time and mark allocation
| Sub-task | Activity | Time allocation | Mark allocation | Assessment tools |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Determine the current cost of electricity. | 40 minutes | 15 | |
