Title: Impact of U.S. Tariff Policies on International Trade and Investment
Introduction
The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) acknowledges the decision by the United States (US) Government to reduce its reciprocal tariff on Malaysian exports from 25% to 19%, effective 1 Aug 2025. The Malaysia-United States (US) tariff negotiations which began on 6 May 2025 were officially concluded on 31 July 2025 (Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, 2025).
In 2025, the United States imposed a reciprocal tariff of 25% on Malaysian exports under President Trump’s new trade policy. After several rounds of negotiation, the rate was reduced to 19%, effective 1 August 2025. This situation reflects how tariff decisions by major economies can create global impacts such as disrupting trade flows, increasing costs, and affecting investment confidence worldwide.
