Objective:
To gain a deeper understanding of intercultural communication by engaging with a person from a different cultural background and analyzing the similarities and differences in communication styles, norms, and practices.
Assignment Overview:
1. Find a Cultural Exchange Partner:
- Identify a person from a different cultural background (e.g., a classmate, a friend, or someone from a community event).
2. Conduct a Brief Interview:
- Have a 15-20 minute conversation with your cultural exchange partner. Focus on understanding their communication style and cultural norms.
- Prepare 3-5 key questions such as:
□ How do you usually greet people in your culture?
□ What are some common misunderstandings you’ve experienced in communication with people from other cultures?
□ How do you express respect or politeness in your culture?
3. Document the Interaction:
- Take a photo of your cultural exchange partner (with their consent) or the setting of your conversation.
4. Write a Short Reflection:
- Introduction: Briefly introduce your cultural exchange partner and the context of the interaction.
- Analysis: Summarize the key similarities and differences in communication styles observed during the interview.
- Reflection: Briefly reflect on what you learned about intercultural communication from this interaction.
5. Submit:
- Reflection: 500-700 words
- Photo: Include one photo with a short caption.
Evaluation Criteria:
- Observation: Clarity in summarizing communication styles and cultural norms.
- Reflection: Insightfulness in understanding and personal reflection on intercultural communication.
- Presentation: Quality and relevance of the written reflection and visual documentation.

b. Time New Roman, Front size 12, 1.5 spacing, justified.

BKC 3023 Group Assignment 40%
In group of 10, you have to find an appropriate service opportunity or cultural subgroup that would allow you to 1) engage relatively regularly with the same community or neighbourhood, 2) provide you a space to interact with people who are significantly different from you, and 3) give you some exposure to the same community or neighbourhood.
In the week 11, the students are required to conduct a exhibition with a sub-cultural group in the project of visual ethnography.
The assignment is broken down into 4 parts:
a) proposal presentation – 10%
b) Activities – visual ethnography & exhibition – 40%
c) Final presentation -20%
d) Final report – 20%
