Question 1
State whether the statements below are TRUE or FALSE. Give an explanation to justify your answer.
i. Velocity is an intensive property of a system.
ii. One kilogram of water at a temperature of 225°C and 500 kPa has a volume of 0.078405 m3.
iii. Given two identical masses in a rigid tank and piston-cylinder device, the amount of heat required to heat up the piston-cylinder device is higher than the rigid tank at the same temperature difference.
iv. Enthalpy of vaporization decreases with pressure.
v. Van der Waals equation of state would predict less accurate state functions as compared to Ideal Gas equation of state.
Question 2
a. A piston-cylinder device containing air undergoes a cycle that is made up of three processes as shown in Figure 1. The relationship for the adiabatic process is given as PIA = C, where k is the specific heat ratio. If the air is an ideal gas with a mass of 0.5 kg and a specific heat constant is assumed, calculate the heat transfer for each of the processes (in kJ).
