University | Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) |
Subject | CHE544 Separation Processes |
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Leaching in the metal industry is a hydrometallurgical process which used to extract metals from ores or solid waste. Nowadays, Leaching is becoming a favourable process for recovering or extracting metals from industrial solid waste/sludge. The metals can be precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum, and nonferrous metals such as aluminium, copper nickel, manganese, lead, titanium, and zinc. The process involves dissolving the desired metals into a liquid solvent, typically an acid or a base, so they can be separated from the waste, depending on type of metals to extract. This leaching process is promising because of its effectiveness, versatility, advantages for the environment, and economic. Additionally, it supports sustainability practices, enables the recovery of valuable metals from a variety of waste types, and keeps improving to enhance its efficacy and safety.
