Task Descriptions

Part 1: Phonemic Transcription

1. Choose any part consisting of 50 words from the speech of Daniel Radcliffe: Courage and Compassion.

2. Watch the relevant segment of the video to broadly transcribe the excerpt using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Pay attention to how the words are articulated by the speaker, as they may not always be the same as the citation form (i.e. pronounced in isolation).

Part 2: Description of Speech Sounds

Once the broad transcription is complete, choose ONE (1) word consisting of at least FIVE phonemes to describe, in about 400 words, the changes in:

  • the airstream
  • the movement of the active articulators toward the passive articulators

If the first phoneme to describe is /p/, the lips would be brought close together to articulate the sound. What happens to the lips before the articulation of the next phoneme, for example, /ɑː/? Where is the tongue positioned at this point? What happens to the tongue if the next phoneme is /k/? How does the air escape when each of these sounds is articulated.
