This handbook sets out what SEGi mass communication students must deliver in their final research project: a supervised thesis in five chapters, built on an approved proposal, a pilot-tested instrument and properly authorised data collection.

What the Course Expects

  • Develop a focused research area with awareness of its ethical dimensions, and devise a detailed, comprehensive research strategy.
  • Resolve the research through autonomous work and debate with the supervisor, producing a coherent written study or a practical outcome.

Proposal, Supervisor and Fieldwork Rules

  • Send a short proposal to the coordinator; a supervisor is then assigned. Topics must be viable and not already answered elsewhere.
  • Submit drafts before meetings; supervisors give feedback within one week. Students who do not progress may be reassigned or asked to work independently.
  • Get written permission from organisations (include the approval letter), agree interview arrangements with HR without disrupting operations, and obtain a mall operator’s permission for intercept surveys. Participation is voluntary and answers can be withdrawn.

Required Chapters

  1. Introduction – background, problem statement, research questions and objectives, significance, scope, operational definitions.
  2. Literature Review – past findings by objective, theories or models, conceptual framework, hypotheses for quantitative studies.
  3. Methodology – design, population and sampling, operationalisation of variables, reliability and validity through pilot testing, data collection and analysis.
  4. Data Analysis and Discussion – demographics, results by objective in tables and graphs, statistical outcomes, discussion against theory and literature.
  5. Conclusion – summary, conclusions, implications, recommendations and future research.

Supervisor comments must be addressed; fabrication, falsification and plagiarism lead to disciplinary action.

A five-chapter mass communication thesis is easiest to finish when every research objective runs in a straight line from the problem statement to a hypothesis, a questionnaire section and a results table. Students researching social media topics often under-plan the pilot test and reliability checks in Chapter 3, which delays Chapter 4.
