PART 2:  IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW REPORT (30%)

Objective:

To assess the challenges that principals face in their role as instructional leaders.

Task Overview:

You are required to conduct an in-depth interview with two (2) principals at any school or educational institution. Following the interviews, you will compose a report that analyses your findings based on the research objective.

Your submitted report must contain the following two sections:

1. Key Informants’ Profile

  • Provide a detailed profile for each of the two principals.
  • This section must be written in a descriptive, narrative format. Do not use a table.

2. Qualitative Data Analysis

  • Analyse the interview findings descriptively and narratively, organizing the content by themes.
  • Your analysis must identify and discuss a minimum of four (4) distinct themes.
  • For each theme, you must integrate a mixture of:
    • Direct Speech: Verbatim quotes from the interviewees.
    • Reported Speech: Paraphrased summaries of the interviewees’ points.
  • Please Note:This section should be a formal analysis. It must NOT be written in a dialogue/conversation format or as a raw data transcription.

The following is a sample of how your report should be :

Theme

Lack of Parent Involvement :

The key informants indicated that a significant challenge they face is the lack of parent involvement in school activities. They reported that this issue directly impacts student engagement and the success of school-wide initiatives. Principal A (KI1) commented on this difficulty.

Direct speech

“…..it is a constant struggle to get parents to attend meetings or even respond to emails. We can plan a wonderful academic workshop, but if parents don’t come, the students miss out on that home support. It feels like we are working with one hand tied behind our backs.”

Reported speech
As for Principal B (KI2), he would be frustrated by the low turnout at important school events. His school sends home newsletters and makes phone calls, but he also mentioned that the effort often doesn’t lead to results.

“ … I am of course happy with the few parents who are always there. However, I would prefer to see a much wider range of parents participating, especially for parent-teacher conferences. We need to find a way to communicate that their involvement is not just welcome, but essential for their child’s education.”

The key informants reported that this lack of engagement makes their leadership role more difficult, as they must find new strategies to bridge the communication gap. Both informants agreed that when parents are disconnected, the responsibility to motivate students falls entirely on the school. They also stated that supportive and involved parents create a positive school culture, whereas a lack of involvement can lead to students feeling isolated and unsupported.

3. Key findings and conclusion – elaborate on key findings and draw a conclusion
