Students are required to work in groups of 5 to 6 members to create a report, slides, and a presentation of 10-15 minutes on one of the following topics in Mass Communication Theories after a thorough literature review:
- Medium is the Message Theory
- Diffusion of Innovations Theory
- Reception Theory
- Uses and Gratifications Theory
- Social Marketing Theory
- Spiral of Silence Theory
- Media Dependency Theory
- Cultivation Theory
Your presentation should include:
- The history, origin, and background of the theory.
- The evolution or development of the theory.
- The important notions, concepts, and assumptions or arguments of the theory.
- The critics of the theory.
- The potential future development of the theory.
Learning Outcome
LO1 – Demonstrate a basic knowledge of concepts and theories in communication.
LO2 – Explain the connection between communication theories and its application.
LO3 – Apply communication phenomena to communication theories.
LO4 – Identify the suitable theories to be used for communication research.
Assignment Requirements
- There should be only 5 to 6 members in a group.
- Your report should be 2500-3000 words (word count without references), typed double-spaced with 12 font size.
- Word count should be indicated at the end of the assignment.
- Must use online journals/articles within 10 YEARS ONLY (2015-2025). Excluding the reference to the theory’s origin which can be the year when the Author proposed the theory.
- You may use various mediums for the slides, not limited to Microsoft PowerPoint only. Be creative, but do the research first.
- Please include subtitles in the video (if the audio cannot be heard clearly).
- It is compulsory to include your face and slides in your video presentation. All group members of the groups/students must include their faces and present some portion of the presentation.
- Save your slide presentation on YouTube (upload date within the due date) or a drive and send the link for submission. Make sure you share the link at the end of your report.
- Please submit only one submission per group.
- Please use the assignment cover sheet, the link to your slides/video, the reference list (APA referencing), and the feedback form (as one document) provided in myTIMeS and indicate group members’ names.
- Submit the assignment to Turnitin only. The percentage of similarity generated by Turnitin should be less than 20%. (Use of AI for writing is restrticeted please check on declaration form)
- EXTENSIONS are available only when a formal request for extension is submitted and accompanied by appropriate documentation, e.g., medical certificate, funeral notice, etc.
- Late assignments for this assessment task will be penalised at 1 mark per day for the first week and will not be accepted if more than one week late unless an extension has been granted.
- Plagiarism is a serious offense and plagiarized work will result in an F grade for the assignment.
