Assignment Overview

The final assignment is designed to integrate both theoretical understanding and practical application of project management and consultancy in real-world business contexts. It provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to analyze, evaluate, and communicate project management practices while engaging with diverse stakeholders.

Students will engage with a real-world organization that undertakes project-based activities (e.g., construction, IT, consulting, energy, healthcare, retail). By conducting an interview with a project manager, consultant, or senior manager, students will explore how project management concepts are applied in practice, the challenges organizations face, and how these practices are influenced by both local and global environments.

Part A – Group Task

• To access Part A
• Students will be placed into groups through random assignment.
• As a group, students will conduct a semi-structured interview with a relevant organizational stakeholder to explore key domains of project management and consultancy.
• Based on the interview findings, students must prepare a 12-slide professional communication deck using any modern presentation platform (PowerPoint, Canva, Prezi, Google Slides, Adobe Spark, etc.)
• The group presentation should be recorded and uploaded to YouTube as an unlisted video. The link must then be submitted in the answer box provided in this document.
• Evidence of the interview session must be submitted in this document as well. This includes an interview transcript and pictures of the session.
• Only ONE (1) member of each group is required to submit the completed answer document.

• Based on the insights derived from Part A as well as further research, students are to evaluate project management theories in both local and global contexts.
• Complete this task by submitting your answer within the answer box provided in this document.

Project Management in the 21^st Century

The field of project management is evolving rapidly, driven by significant contextual changes. In the 21st century, these changes are accelerating, presenting new challenges and opportunities for project managers. Key issues such as sustainability, social responsibility, governance, agility, and artificial intelligence are now at the forefront of project management.

Today’s project managers must adapt to these evolving demands. The 21^st century project manager needs to be equipped with skills and methodologies that differ significantly from those of the past. This new breed of project managers must be agile, socially responsible, and proficient in leveraging technology to address contemporary challenges.

The human element also remains crucial in project management. Effective management of human resources is essential for project success. Project managers must possess strong communication skills, empathy, and the ability to foster high-performing teams. These qualities are vital for navigating the complexities of modern projects and achieving professional success.

Finally, sustainability is a critical challenge of our time. Organizations worldwide are integrating sustainability into their strategies and operations. However, the incorporation of sustainability principles into project management practices is still in its early stages. Project managers must lead the way in embedding sustainability into projects to ensure that economic development does not compromise future generations’ needs.

In today’s competitive business environment, effective project management is more important than ever. Whether launching a new product, implementing a complex IT system, or organizing a major event, successful project management is key. It enables organizations to achieve strategic objectives, deliver value to stakeholders, and maintain a competitive edge. By providing clear direction, optimizing resources, managing risks, fostering communication and collaboration, and ensuring quality and adaptability, project management helps businesses navigate complexity and achieve success in the 21^st century.

Question 1.B Individual Task

Work Required: Building on the insights derived from Part A, and supported by further academic and industry research, you are required to compose a critical analysis that evaluates the relevance and applicability of project management methodologies in today’s globalized and dynamic project environments.

The paper should address the following points:

(i)  Contemporary Challenges

o Discuss the current demands of projects and the new challenges faced by project managers today.

(ii)  Evaluation of Project Management Methodologies

o Select two project management methodologies for discussion.

o Critically evaluate how well these methodologies address contemporary challenges. Identify their strengths and limitations in the current context.

o Discuss how these methodologies are perceived and applied in local vs. global project contexts, drawing on insights from your interview and additional research.

(iii) Future Directions

o Propose potential developments or innovations in project management methodologies that could better address the evolving needs of 21st-century projects.

Your analysis should demonstrate a comprehensive evaluation of the continued relevance and adaptability of the chosen project management methodologies in today’s dynamic project environments.
