For the September 2026 semester, OUM has rewritten the MPU3412 Khidmat Masyarakat assignment around contemporary social issues such as the cost of living, food insecurity and the digital divide. Learners plan and run one small project, then submit three linked pieces of evidence (a report, a video and a reflective journal) plus five forum postings.
Purpose
The objective of the assignment is to evaluate the learner’s knowledge and understanding in applying the skills and social responsibilities within the community; apply communication skills, leadership and working as a team; and practise skills in information management, projects and entrepreneurship.
Part I: Community Service Project (90 Marks)
Community service refers to voluntary and unpaid activities undertaken by individuals or groups to address community needs and contribute to the well-being and development of society. It promotes social responsibility, civic awareness, cooperation, and active participation in improving the quality of life at the local or national level.
Activity 1: Community Service Project (report limited to 9 pages)
Carry out ONE small-scale community service project in your immediate surroundings based on a real contemporary social issue. The activity should address a genuine need, issue, or concern in the community while responding to it through meaningful action and participation.
The project may be carried out individually or with family members, relatives, housemates, colleagues, friends, neighbours or coursemates (not more than five members, including yourself). The written submission must be prepared individually.
The activity should address one or more contemporary community issues, such as:
- Rising cost of living and B40 financial pressure
- Food insecurity and food-bank support
- Mental health and community well-being
- Educational support and the digital divide
- A clean environment, waste and recycling
- Youth employability and skills
- Support for marginalised groups (OKU, elderly, refugees, Orang Asli)
- Flood readiness and disaster response
- Online safety and cyber awareness
Organise the Activity 1 report into the following parts:
- Choosing Your Community Issue: State which current issue in your community you acted on and why, backed by local observation and at least one recent source (news report, statistic or official figure).
- Project Overview and Who It Helps: What you did, when and where, and which group of people it was meant to help.
- The People Behind the Project: Every person who took part, how each is connected to you, and the task each person handled.
- Aims and the Difference You Wanted to Make: Two to three clear, realistic aims and the specific benefit you hoped the community would gain.
- How You Planned and Ran It: Timeline, resources, rough budget and the main steps from idea to completion.
- Problems Faced and How You Adapted: Difficulties during the project and how the team changed its approach.
- Real Results, Evidence and What You Learned: What changed for the people you helped, supported by photographs, short testimonials or numbers, and your most important lesson.
Activity 2: Video Presentation of the Community Service Project (4 to 8 minutes)
Prepare a video presentation based on the same project carried out in Activity 1. The video should show your direct involvement, explain the purpose of the project and the community issue addressed, demonstrate how the contemporary issue was tackled, and stay consistent with the activity, participants, location and outcomes described in the Activity 1 report.
The video should include:
- Setting the scene: Introduce yourself and name the contemporary issue your project responds to.
- Why this issue matters now: Show the local situation and explain why the issue needs attention right now.
- Showing the action: Real footage of the main things you did during the project.
- The people and the difference made: Let the people involved be seen or heard, with clear evidence of what changed.
- Your reflection in front of the camera: What the experience taught you personally.
- Closing message and call to action: One clear takeaway and an invitation for viewers to act on the same issue.
Activity 3: Reflective Journal (limited to 7 pages)
Using the self-reflective questions below as a guideline, write a Reflective Journal (RJ) on the community service activity. The reflection should go beyond description by analysing the experience, connecting it to broader social issues and considering its future implications.
- What did carrying out this project teach you about the everyday reality of the issue you chose, particularly something you had not fully understood before you began?
- Describe a situation when the project did not go as planned or made you feel uncomfortable. How did you respond, and what did that experience reveal about you?
- By working directly with the people affected by the issue, what did you learn about your own strengths or limitations, and what would you do differently next time?
- Now that the project is complete, what is your view on what is needed for someone to “truly serve the community”, and has that view changed?
Reminders
- Read all the suggested activities and plan how to implement them; discuss any difficulty with your e-tutor.
- Plan your personal expenditure for the activities.
- Upload the video directly as an attachment; it should not exceed 400MB.
- The video must match the documentation in Activity 1; marks may be deducted for inconsistencies.
- Prepare the assignment individually and do not copy or plagiarise another person’s work.
- Community service activities must be carried out during the current semester.
- Avoid collaborating with large-scale companies, associations or organisations.
- Generative AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT) are not permitted, under OUM Registrar Circular 5/2024 on AI use.
- A permission letter for community service activities can be requested from the faculty by email; allow up to three working days.
Part II: Online Class Participation (10 Marks)
Discuss the following topic in the forum and submit proof of your participation in the online discussions:
Small-scale community-based social service projects have the potential to make a significant impact in addressing pressing contemporary social issues, such as the rising cost of living, mental health, and the digital divide, comparable to the contributions of large-scale national programs. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Share and exchange views with your course mates.
How to submit proof of online class participation
- Select the best FIVE (5) of your postings from the forum discussion set up by your tutor.
- Take screenshots of the postings and include them as images (JPG or PNG) in your assignment.
- Each screenshot should show your name, the discussion title, day, date and time.
- Make sure all screenshots are clear and easy to read.
