For the September 2026 semester, OUMH1603 learners write an analytical essay on how 21st-century skills make ODL students effective, independent and responsible in a digital environment, and join a myINSPIRE forum on generative AI, fairness and academic integrity in open and distance learning.

Specific Instructions

  • Answer in Malay or English.
  • 2,500 to 3,000 words, excluding references.
  • Submit the assignment once only, as a PDF file, online.
  • Submission date: 20 November 2026.
  • The assignment accounts for 50% of the total marks for the course.

Learning Aims

  • Apply 21st-century learning skills, including critical thinking, communication, digital literacy and self-directed learning, in analysing and responding to real-world learning scenarios.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and responsibility in managing learning processes.

Part I: Essay Writing (40 Marks)

Open and Distance Learning gives learners the flexibility to study anytime and anywhere through digital platforms, online resources, virtual discussions and collaborative activities. This flexibility also means learners must manage their time, communicate and collaborate online, critically evaluate digital information, solve learning problems and use technology responsibly. In a connected world, ODL learners also need 21st-century skills and global and environmental awareness to become independent, responsible and adaptable lifelong learners.

Based on this scenario, prepare an analytical essay of 2,500 to 3,000 words discussing how 21st-century skills can help ODL students become effective, independent and responsible learners in a digital learning environment. Your essay must:

  1. Describe FOUR (4) relevant 21st-century skills and explain their importance to ODL learners.
  2. Using relevant examples from your experience, explain how these skills can be applied to overcome common challenges in ODL.
  3. Explain how global and environmental awareness can influence the way ODL learners study, communicate, make decisions and act responsibly in a digitally connected world.
  4. Support your discussion of Questions 1, 2 and 3 with relevant examples and evidence from credible sources.
  5. Reflect on TWO (2) 21st-century skills that you need to strengthen and explain how improving them could enhance your effectiveness as an ODL learner.

General guidelines: show evaluation-level thinking (analyse, evaluate, justify), support arguments with examples and scholarly references, keep the essay organised and coherent, and apply APA referencing accurately.

Part II: Online Class Participation (10 Marks)

Discuss the following topic in the myINSPIRE forum: to what extent can generative artificial intelligence enhance fairness and accessibility in ODL without compromising academic integrity and authentic learning? Discuss with relevant examples.

  • Post thoughtfully, explain clearly and respond respectfully to at least TWO (2) classmates with constructive feedback.
  • Select your best FIVE (5) postings (3 of your own posts and 2 responses to peers) and paste screenshots (JPG or PNG) into the assignment, showing name, discussion title, day, date and time.

For OUMH1603 the safest plan is one section per question: four skills with a clear ODL purpose, then a real study problem for each skill (missed forum deadlines, unreliable online sources, isolation in group tasks), then global and environmental awareness, and finally an honest reflection on two skills you still need to build. Markers look for evaluation words and APA-cited evidence, not a list of definitions.
