Step 1: Form Your Group and Select a Film

• Choose a film that clearly portrays intercultural communication. Some great choices include:
• Crash (2004)

• The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)
• Lost in Translation (2003)
• The Blind Side (2009)
• Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
• The Farewell (2019)
• My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

Make sure your choice includes clear examples of intercultural interaction, conflict, or adaptation.

What Kind of Film Should You Choose?

You need to choose a film that shows people from different cultures interacting, especially where:

• Cultural misunderstandingshappen
• Stereotypesor prejudicesare shown
• People go through culture shock, adaptation, or conflict resolution
• Themes of identity, race, ethnicity, or migrationare explored

Step 2: Watch the Film as a Group

Take notes on:

• Key cultural groups represented
• Moments of miscommunication or cultural misunderstanding
• Themes of stereotyping, prejudice, power, or identity
• Relevant body language, verbal vs. non-verbal cues

Step 3: Start Writing the Report (4000–5000 Words)

 1. Introduction (300–500 words)

• State the film title, year, director.
• Explain why the film is relevant to intercultural communication.
• Present your main thesis(the big idea your review will argue).

2. Summary (600–800 words)

• Briefly describe the film’s storyline.
• Highlight key scenes that show intercultural communication in action.

3. Arguments (5 minimum, ~1500–2000 words total)

• Each argument should:
• Focus on one issue (e.g., stereotyping, cultural shock, identity, ethnocentrism, communication styles).
• Use specific scenesfrom the film as examples.
• Include scholarly support — e.g., authors from your lectures/readings.

Example Argument Topics:

• The role of stereotypesin shaping cross-cultural misunderstanding.
• How language barriersaffect relationships in the film.
• The portrayal of cultural adaptation(e.g., culture shock or integration).
• Power dynamics between dominant and minority cultures.
• The impact of non-verbal communication differences.

Apply 2–3 key intercultural communication theories, such as:

Link these theories clearly to the events or characters in the film.

4. Review (300–500 words)

• Critically assess how effective the film is in portraying intercultural issues.
• Was it biased? Simplified? Enlightening?
• Comment on the filmmaking quality, story balance, and message.

5. Conclusion (300–400 words)

• Summarize your main points and restate your thesis.
• Reflect on what viewers can learn from the film about intercultural communication.

Step 4: Group Video Log (10–15 minutes)

Tips:

• Use slides or visuals if helpful.
• Each member can speak on one of the 5 arguments.
• Introduce the film, summarize your thesis, then explain your arguments and theory application.
• Record using Zoom, OBS, or even a phone camera.
• Upload to YouTube (set as unlisted if you want privacy).
• Paste the YouTube link at the end of your essay.
